Jewelry Material Guide: How should we choose the material of jewelry?

When choose jewelry, it can sometimes be difficult to tell with the naked eye which metal and material the jewelry is made of. In addition to your style, knowing what your jewelry is made of can also help your health. Finding the right ring, bracelet or necklace is often more than just how it looks – there are other factors you should consider to understand which material is good for you.

For example:

When you're considering which metal to choose for jewelry, consider how your choice of metal will affect your budget, how it will feel weighty in your hand or on your neck, how much maintenance is required to keep the metal looking good, and whether you'd be comfortable with the material allergy. Also, consider the fact that some jewelry pieces consist of a core material that is concealed by an outer coating or plating of another material, while other jewelry pieces are made of metal alloys.Hereby, we will explain in depth!

Jewelry can be simply divided into two type: precious and fashion jewelry. Among them, the most commonly used metals for fine jewelry are gold, silver, platinum and gemstone, while fashion jewelry is made of stainless steel, copper, and alloy. There are many alternative materials used in jewelry, such as titanium, tungsten, ceramics, germanium, cotton rope, nylon, etc. Due to limited of article, this article only focuses on explaining common metal materials!

Fine Jewelry:

Platinum

Platinum, a precious metal with a natural silvery-white hue, was a popular jewelry metal in the early 20th century. Now the number one choice for engagement rings, wedding bands, and other types of jewelry. Platinum's natural white luster will not tarnish, fade, tarnish, or oxidize (unlike gold, which requires polishing), making it a symbol of eternal love.

Strength and durability: Platinum is stronger and more durable than gold, scratches more easily than 14k gold, is 40% heavier than 14k gold, and unlike gold, is truly white. In terms of its strength, its inlaid products will be stronger. Because platinum is so hard, engraved details on platinum jewelry will be more clearly defined than other materials. When platinum jewelry is scratched, an oxide layer called patina forms.

Gold

Of all the metal choices for jewelry, gold is the most commonly used because it is naturally soft and malleable. The purest gold is 24k and also the softest. Since 100% pure or 24 karat gold is too soft to be processed into jewelry, other metal combinations/metal alloys are added to make the metal into jewelry. Generally, 14k and 18k are used more often. If other metal alloys, such as copper, silver, are added to pure gold, the hardness of gold will increase. When gold jewelry is scratched, the gold is lost and it looks like a scratch on the jewelry.

Silver

To be considered 925 sterling silver, jewelry must contain at least 92.5% pure silver, which is why it is marked "S925" "925". Due to its metal alloy composition, sterling silver is harder than sterling silver, but it can still be easily scratched. In terms of color and appearance, sterling silver can range from bright white to off-white, and can have a shiny or matte finish.

Strength and Durability: Regardless of initial appearance, silver has been known to tarnish. To prevent your sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing, place it in an anti-tarnish bag, or store in a cool, dry place. Rust on sterling silver can be removed with a silver polishing cloth.

Summary: The above precious metal materials have high value, good ductility, hypoallergenic and other characteristics.
